Last night we joined Sydney and the rest of the world in celebrating Chinese New Year as six water drummers performed a special drum ceremony as fireworks burst above and the Sydney Opera House glowed red behind.
Today, Sydney joins the rest of the world in celebrating the Lunar New Year. With Chinatown the historic heart of the festivities, this year’s 16 day program of events extends across the city - the Sydney Harbour Bridge, the Sydney Opera House, and Circular Quay station will all illuminate red in celebration of the Year of The Monkey.
Are you a monkey? People born in the Year of the Monkey (that’s the years: 1920, 1932, 1944, 1956, 1968, 1980, 1992, 2004, and 2016) are generally thought to be fun-loving, energetic and inquisitive. They are also confident, charismatic, loyal and inventive and their intelligence allows them to be quickly adaptable. Sometimes, the Monkey can be a little too curious for his or her own good though!
From the ever popular dragon boat races to this year’s new lunar lanterns, the 20th anniversary of Sydney’s Chinese New Year Festival is bursting with exciting events.
Take your Chinese New Year celebrations to the next level in 2016 – bring your friends and family to the top of the Sydney Harbour Bridge for a karaoke session they’ll never forget.
The Karaoke Climb – available from 1 February to 21 February only – follows the BridgeClimb Express route to the summit and is commentated exclusively in Mandarin. At the summit, you can choose from a selection of popular Chinese and K-pop hits to sing solo, in duet, or as a pop group!
You’ll receive an 8s video of your performance which is yours to keep.
