Superman Conquers Fear of Heights to Climb Sydney Harbour Bridge

On Tuesday 20th June, Superman, known for his courage, completed an act of unexpected bravery by conquering his fear of heights to climb the Sydney Harbour Bridge.

Dean Cain who famously played Superman was in Sydney for Supernova Comic Con and Gaming Expo, and was reunited on the Bridge with Terri Hatcher who played his heroine Lois Lane.

Dean was reportedly very nervous, but encouraged by his BridgeClimb Climb Leader and cheered on by family and friends, refused to let a little thing like ascending 134 metres above the harbour stop him from completing the Sydney must-do activity.

Terri, on her second climb after her first 10 years ago, congratulated her friend at the summit for his achievement.

During the summit celebration taking photos, Dean and Terri intuitively assumed the classic pose –with Superman about to take off and his leading lady hanging on to his muscular neck.

Dean who has been in the military and has jumped out of helicopters manages his fear by “just getting through it”.

While it might be a surprise to hear that Superman is afraid of heights, BridgeClimb’s Face Your Fear Expert, Gemma Cribb B Psych (hons), M Psychol (Clin), notes it’s very common with 1 in 20 people not liking heights.

BridgeClimb partnered with Gemma to develop a microsite: http://www.bridgeclimb.com/face-your-fear/ with resources helping climbers to understand their fears and the steps that can be taken to overcome them.

Ten Top tips listed include, Watch your thinking, Trust your Body and Reward yourself. Other resources include videos from the psychologist and from Climb Leaders with extensive experience helping climbers with their own challenging journey.

BridgeClimb proudly adds Dean Cain’s photo to a Face-your-fear gallery where prevailing celebrities like Dean inspire others to realise, with a little help from friends, family and the BridgeClimb team, they too can do it!

It was fitting that Superman and Lois Lane’s should be reunited at the top of the Sydney Harbour Bridge, one of the world’s most romantic locations. The summit has seen more than 5,000 engagements, countless anniversary celebrations and 29 weddings.
