From Painter to Climber: 82 year-old revisits the Sydney Harbour Bridge with BridgeClimb
In the 1960s, Irishman Patrick Lonergan was part of the team responsible for painting the Sydney Harbour Bridge as part of its annual maintenance. Originally from Rathgormack, County Waterford, Ireland, Patrick and his wife Pamela moved to Sydney in 1965. Before their journey to Australia, Patrick worked on the railways in England, while Pamela was a teacher.
Upon arriving in Sydney, Patrick continued working on the railways before securing a job as a painter on the Sydney Harbour Bridge, where he worked alongside a then-young Paul Hogan. During his time in Australia, he also enlisted in the Territorial Army. Meanwhile, Pamela continued her teaching career in a Sydney school.
After returning to Ireland, Patrick often reminisced about his time on the Bridge and dreamed of one day experiencing it again from a new perspective. Now, at 82 years old, he has finally fulfilled that dream by climbing the Bridge with BridgeClimb.
