Things to do in The Rocks with Sydney's Famous Ghost Tours

Q&A with with Climb Leader & Ghost Tour Guide Jonathon Brian

Since 1994, The Rocks Ghost Tours have been frightening, educating and delighting both locals and tourists with their gruesome tales of the area and those who haunt it on their lantern-lit guided tours. Ghost Tour Guide Jonathon Brian is an expert of all things to do in The Rocks both old and new, so we asked for his suggestions on the top things to do to experience Sydney like a local.

What is your take on the must-do experience in Sydney?

If you are talking about must do experiences, it's a BridgeClimb of course! Not only because it truly is an amazing must-do experience, but also because there is no better place to spot all the other places you could discover in the best city in Australia.

My other suggestions would be taking a ferry to Watsons Bay and following the Hermitage Track all the way to Rose Bay. You’ll walk through the beautiful Foreshore National Park as well as some of the finest streets in the Easern Suburb’s fanciest suburb Vaucluse.

Along the way you’ll be spoilt for choice for places to have a swim or spot the unique flora growing along the shoreline from Parsley Bay, Nielsen Park, Queens Beach, Milk Beach and Hermitage Bay.

The Hermitage Track also allows you to discover Aboriginal rock carvings along the way and connect yourself with the amazing history of Indigenous Australians. Once you’ve reached Vaucluse House it's time to say G’Day to the Ghost of William Charles Wentworth, and try to work out why he was described in his day as ‘the ablest man in the Colony’.

If you are still feeling energetic, hire a kayak from Rose Bay and paddle out to Shark Island and you’ll be truly immersed in what Arthur Phillip described as the finest harbour he had ever seen!

What is something special visitors can’t miss out on while on The Rocks Ghost Tour?

Archaeologists have always known that to really understand a place, you have to literally scratch the surface. A Ghost Tour through The Rocks actually takes you below ground, into little known cellars and basement areas where you can, if you are open to it, truly sense the energies of the spirits from the early days of Sydney.

The only way to see the future is to connect to the past so take a Ghost Tour in The Rocks...if you dare!

What is your favourite thing about The Rocks and why should people visit when in Sydney?

The Rocks precinct provides visitors with a unique opportunity to connect with the amazingly complex story of Australia. The ancient land, girt by sea, home to the oldest surviving culture on this planet is now a multi-cultural, exciting and dynamic place that offers even a first time visitor such rewarding experiences that they will want to keep returning, to keep learning and discovering.
